This musical fantasy features gorgeous cinematography and popular songs from the 1920s-30s. Steve Martin, in his first dramatic role, stars as Arthur, a Depression-era sheet-music salesman with a failing business but big dreams. When Arthur faces problems with his wife, Joan, he begins an affair with a shy and beautiful teacher, Eileen (Bernadette Peters). Though Arthur and Eileen prove to be kindred spirits, fate may not have their happiness in store. Including a tour-de-force dance performance by Christopher Walken, critic Pauline Kael wrote that the dance numbers are “funny, amazing, and beautiful all at once.”
