“MANTRA – Sounds into Silence” is a feature-length documentary that charts the history, expansion, and effect of the musical/social phenomenon of Kirtan (call-and-response mantra chanting). It focuses on the everyday people who are finding healing and a sense of inner peace by singing mantras together with others just like them, but it also features the artists and musicians who are the focus of this new music-based movement. As our characters’ stories about their connection to the music unfold, we meet the musicians who have inspired them deeply. Through these encounters, we will discover how Deva Primal & Miten, Krishna Das, Snatam Kaur, Lama Gyurme, Jai Uttal, MC Yogi and others came to this music themselves and how, over the years, it transformed their lives too.
Following the movie there will be a panel discussion to deepen the exploration and a chance to experience Kirtan for yourself, live, with the Infinite Compassion Orchestra:
The Infinite Compassion Orchestra is Baja Arizona’s premier kirtan ensemble. With a commitment to Bhakti Yoga and connecting with the divine through ancient Sanskrit mantras and music, the Orchestra is an artful blend of East & West. Featuring Kasey Gopal (harmonium and vocals); Ashley Gee (vocals); Hadji Banjovi (arco banjo); Mark Rein’l-Bautista (upright bass); Vicki Brown (violin); Matt Moon (tabla); and Chris Molinari (guitar).
