Norteño and Tejano

A Curious Conversation Inspired by Upcoming Music at the Fox

Come September, the Fox Theatre will host multi-grammy-winner Lila Downs, whose exquisite artistry has long-bridged traditions from across the Americas.  Her most recent album, “La Sánchez,” draws heavily on the music of Northern Mexico—whose musical traditions have of course had a huge influence in our region, including through Tejano and Norteño genres.  This Curious Conversation with Adalberto Gallegos—a living legend of the the Tejano world—will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of the musical fabric that very much surrounds us here in the Sonoran Desert.  This event is free to attend, but please register above.

Adalberto Gallegos singing

Originally from Sonora, Mexico, Adalberto Gallegos was an early member of the foundational youth mariachi group in Tucson, Los Changuitos Feos.  He exploded onto the Tejano scene in the 1970s, ending up as the lead singer for the seminal Tejano band, The Latin Breed.  Described as “walking history,” he continues to make music that draws on a wide range of genres—making him an ideal guide through the music of the borderlands.
