John McEuen and the Circle Band

Will the Circle Be Unbroken

John McEuen and his unique cast of iconic Americana string wizards share the music and memories the landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken platinum album, (initiated by John), and of his incredible 55-year career including his time with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. John was recently inducted in to the American Banjo Museum’s Hall of Fame. With narrative and music of early NGDB, co-founding member John takes us on their incredible journey – interwoven with Nitty Gritty favorites, hot bluegrass, rarely heard Carter Family music, all in a multi-media presentation that features archival footage – and some new classics from his new album on Chesky Records – Made in Brooklyn. – (Stereophile Magazine’s Record of the Month).

A unique part of the show covers NGDB’s 1977 Russia trip, and what happened behind the Iron Curtain to the first American band to tour there. The cast, all stellar musicians in their own right, includes:

John McEuen | banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, vocals

Les Thompson | bass, vocals, bouzouki  – an original NGDB  founding member

John Cable | guitar/vocals – also toured Russia as NGDB member.

Matt Cartsonis |vocals/mandola/guitar  25 year music partner with John

Additionally, there will be a “special jamming” guest – Hans Olson.

When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded Will the Circle Be Unbroken the icons of Bluegrass, Country, and West coast country rock convened: Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Vassar Clements, and Maybelle Carter. Six hot August 1971 days produced the benchmark record relevant to this day!                                                                                                         John, with his banjo, guitar, fiddle and mandolin, shares all the hits and stories behind the music leading up to this magic time when three generations came together. The Library of Congress inducted the multi-platinum ‘Circle’ as one of the most important American recordings. ‘Circle’ is also in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The evening’s journey leads to encores and music from McEuen’s new highly praised record – Made in Brooklyn – on Chesky Records. With encores of music from the new album, the audience will have seen the entire span of John McEuen’s 50 years in music and been taken back through some of the best years of their lives.

Some of the songs this evening will include the following: Mr. Bojangles, Some of Shelly’s Blues, Keep on the Sunny Side, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Dance Little Jean, Long Hard Road, House at Pooh Corner, Wreck on the Hiway, Earl’s Breakdown Way Downtown, Cannonball Rag, Dismal Swamp, I Saw the Light, Acoustic Traveller, Fingerbuster, She Darked the Sun, The Grand Ole Opry Song – after the “multimedia section” of the show, it is different every night!

I went to see Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in college at Gallagher Arena. A bunch of guys in the dorm pooled our monies together and threw in an extra buck a piece to pay one of the guys to sleep out for tickets.. we got front row. We were having the time of our lives when during a fiddle solo, John McEuen leaped over the monitors and past the edge of the stage and landed in between John Mathiason and me. McEuen never missed a lick of that solo. THAT MOMENT is forever etched in my soul…     -Garth Brooks 2014
